Sometimes, a pregnancy requires extra attention because of special circumstances surrounding the mother’s health or her baby’s development. That's why we're here.
At the Gainesville Perinatal Center, we work to assure the most up-to-date approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of high-risk pregnancy are utilized to achieve a healthy outcome.
If a woman’s obstetrician/ gynecologist (OB/GYN) suspects a pregnancy might require an increased level of care, he or she will refer the patient to a maternal-fetal physician, also known as a perinatologist. This specialist, who pursues three additional years of medical training after completing a four-year OB/GYN residency, assesses the health of mother and baby, manages the patient’s pre-existing conditions, monitors the pregnancy and helps to ensure a successful birth.
Perinatologists monitor any unusual health conditions which may include but are not limited to maternal diabetes, chronic hypertension or advanced maternal age. These specialists also follow a baby’s development if a medical issue regarding the mother or baby is discovered. Advanced imaging techniques, such as targeted ultrasonography and fetal echocardiogram, and diagnostic tests such as amniocentesis and fetal cord blood sampling help the perinatologist diagnose potential problems. When indicated fetal treatment can be used to treat certain problems your baby may have.
At Gainesville Perinatal Center, maternal-fetal specialist Dr. Alexander Allaire has been granted accreditation in obstetric ultrasound by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM). Receipients of this prestigious designation reflect commitment to provide care of the highest quality.
