The American Cancer Society recommends that even healthy people at normal risk for colon cancer should undergo a colonoscopy at age 50 and every 10 years thereafter, for the purpose of removing colonic polyps before they become cancerous. For African-Americans, the age recommended for your first colonoscopy is 45.
The colonoscopy is a test that allows your doctor to look at the inner lining of your large intestine. He or she uses a thin, flexible tube called a colonoscope to look at the colon in order to detect any potentially cancerous colon polyps or tumors, and areas of inflammation or bleeding that may pose a risk to your health.
Your colon screening may be at no cost to you. Schedule an appointment with The Longstreet Clinic, P.C. today to find out! *
In order to properly prepare for the procedure, you will need to perform a colon prep to clean out your colon. The colon prep typically takes 6 to 8 hours. Plan to stay home during your prep time since you will need to use the bathroom often. Your physician will be able to determine the best type of prep for you and will give you specific instructions to make sure that your entire experience goes as smoothly as possible.
All colonoscopies are done with conscious sedation performed by board-certified anesthesiologists. This helps ensure that your colonoscopy will be a pain-free, pleasant experience.
