Oncology is the branch of medicine that studies and treats cancer
. In addition to diagnosing the illness, an oncologist is concerned with providing the best treatment possible to battle the disease through different therapies and phases, including palliative care. The physicians and staff at the Longstreet Cancer Center are here to provide excellent care to those facing the challenges a cancer diagnosis brings.
After cancer has been diagnosed through biopsy or surgery, you and your physician will decide upon the proper course of action. Depending on your diagnosis, there are several different types of treatment available including radiation, chemotherapy
, hormonal therapy and so forth. We’re committed to providing the best care possible and we do so by offering options so that you and your doctor can decide which type is right for you.
The first course of action generally consists of radiation and/or chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is a method in which high energy radiation is aimed at the tumor in an effort to shrink it. Chemotherapy
is designed to kill cancer cells and can be administered orally in the form of a pill or through an IV scheduled to be delivered in cycles. By offering semi-private suites complete with recliners and personal televisions, as well as free Wi-Fi access, Longstreet Cancer Center’s
state-of-the-art chemotherapy infusion suite is designed for comfort.
After the course of treatment is complete, follow-up appointments with your oncologist are necessary to monitor your health. Once you become a patient of one of our board-certified oncologists, it becomes their goal to provide you with the most thorough care possible. This is accomplished by keeping waiting times at a minimum and being available 24 hours a day. If you’re experiencing an emergency and the office is closed, the answering service message will direct you on how to reach the physician on-call.
