Cervical Cryosurgery

Cervical Cryosurgery

Cervical cryosurgery is performed to treat cervical swelling or the presence of abnormal cells in the cervix. Cryosurgery or cyrotherapy uses a cryophobe placed on the cervix. Liquid carbon dioxide gas moves through the cryophobe and freezes and destroys the tissue. This kills the abnormal cells. Some risks of cervical cryosurgery include:o   Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
Cervical cryosurgery is performed on women who have received abnormal Pap tests and have already had a coloposcopy. The procedure takes a few minutes and causes little discomfort. Most women feel some pressure and a cooling sensation. Women who undergo this procedure can return to their daily routine the same day. It is important to schedule a follow up pap tests to ensure all abnormal tissues has been removed and no infection has occurred. If you are undergoing cervical cryosurgery, contact your physician with any concerns you may have.
