Postpartum Care

Postpartum Care

After delivery, it is easy to forget to take care of yourself. While your newborn may become your top priority, it is important to schedule an appointment with your obstetrician or a certified nurse midwife 4-6 weeks after delivery. It is highly recommended that new mothers attend this appointment.

During this time, you will be faced with many emotional and physical challenges. Talk to your physician to ensure you do not exhaust yourself, you get enough rest and your body is able to physically recover. No matter the type of delivery, your body has to rebuild in order to heal. This process is difficult and takes time and patience.

It is extremely common for mothers to experience feelings of anxiety, loneliness or anger after the birth of a child. If you become extremely emotional, you should speak with you physician about the “baby blues” or postpartum depression. Postpartum depression typically occurs within 3 months of delivery, however it can even occur up to a year later. It is easier to manage symptoms of postpartum depression with early treatment.
