Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which an orthopedic surgeon replaces parts of an arthritic or damaged joint with a prosthesis (metal, plastic or ceramic devices). The prosthesis is designed to replicate the movement of a healthy joint. Hip and knee replacements are the most common types of joint replacements, but surgery can be performed on other joints, including the shoulder.
