It is important for a child to understand what is happening to her body as she grows. A gynecological exam may be necessary if a child experiences:
  • Delayed puberty
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Vulvar or abdominal pain
  • Sexual abuse
Once girls reach 13 years of age, it is standard for gynecological exams to occur without their mother’s presence, though it is the child’s preference.
