Annual Visits

Annual Visits

Annual gynecological visits are highly recommended for women who are 21 years or older or who are sexually active. The exam allows your physicians to assess your reproductive organs and to screen for health concerns. This exam is an opportunity for you to talk with your physician, nurse practitioner or certified nurse midwife about general women’s health, sexual health or reproduction.
Before your gynecological exam, remember to:
  • Schedule your appointment for a day when you are not on your period
  • Try not to have sexual intercourse 1-2 days before your appointment
  • Make a list of questions you want to ask

Gynecological exams typically include a pelvic exam and a Pap smear test.  A pelvic exam allows your physician to examine your internal reproductive organs and look for abnormalities. A pelvic exam is required before hormonal birth control can be prescribed.
A Pap test takes a few cells from your cervix to examine for infection. The main reason women should receive a Pap test regularly is to check for cervical cancer. Gynecological exams may also include screening for a sexually transmitted Infection, a breast exam or a physical exam. Talk with your physician about how often he or she recommends you receive a pelvic exam or Pap test. We offer private exam rooms with changing areas and adjoining bathrooms.

Women over 40 should also receive an annual Mammogram. The Center For Women's Health Breast Center specializes in private screening for women.
