Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

For many years, the main form of treatment for breast abnormalities only seen on mammogram was an open surgical biopsy guided by a preoperative wire placement.

Today, the stereotactic breast needle biopsy has lead to a more minimally invasive, office-based approach to accurately assess breast lesions and has vastly reduced the number of open biopsies. In an effort to continuously provide you with the most advanced and highest quality care, our experienced general surgeons at The Longstreet Clinic, P.C., perform stereotactic breast needle biopsies at our clinic in The Breast Center.

During the procedure, your physician will use local anesthesia on the biopsy site and will take two-dimensional digital images of your breast from two different angles. After the imaging is complete, the various images are then put together to create a three dimensional picture of the abnormal area.

With an extremely accurate picture of the abnormality, your surgeon will then guide a small needle to the appropriate site within the breast and extract a tissue sample for analysis. When the procedure is complete, your physician will send the sample to a pathologist to determine whether or not the abnormality is cancerous or benign.

Due to the simple nature of the procedure, recovery time is minimal. You may experience mild discomfort at the biopsy site and mild bruising may occur. Typically, your physician will recommend that physical activity be limited for 24 to 48 hours. Results from the biopsy normally are available within one week of the procedure. After the results are available, your physician will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the findings and what, if any, further procedures are necessary.

We understand the stress and anxiety involved with a breast biopsy. While the procedure is relatively simple and minimally invasive, many patients are nervous about the nature of the results. From that understanding, the healthcare professionals at The Longstreet Clinic work hard to develop a compassionate and relaxed atmosphere.

Our physicians strive to provide the best care possible in order to give you the peace of mind that comes with an accurate diagnosis. No matter the outcome of the biopsy, our staff is here for you each step of the way and is prepared to put their experience to work for you in order to provide the highest level of care possible.

The providers at the Center for Women’s Health understand that caring for a woman’s health requires more than just good “medical” care. Call (770) 297-2200 or contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced physicians to help you with your health needs.
