Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center now open

Multi-disciplinary approach eases treatment journey for musculoskeletal, neurological concerns

Longstreet Clinic was founded on a vision of cutting-edge, patient-centered health care with access to the best treatment options available. And, this month, Longstreet Clinic added the latest chapter to that journey by opening its Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center.

By combining physical medicine & rehabilitation, neurosurgery, orthopedics, interventional pain management, sports medicine, and physical therapy into one location, Longstreet Clinic offers patients of all ages a comprehensive approach to treating a broad range of physical and neurological conditions.

“What this does is allow a patient that is experiencing a physical or neurological concern the most direct path to receiving comprehensive care,” said Longstreet Clinic physiatrist Holmes B. Marchman, M.D. “Since so many physical and neurological concerns cross over in treatment needs, what the Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center does is allow providers to combine their efforts while easing the process for the patient.”

Dr. Marchman provided a common example for how this works for the practice and the patient.

“For instance, if you are experiencing lower back pain, you may call the Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center and, based on your history and symptoms, be given an appointment with one of our physical medicine and rehabilitation providers,” he explained. “While treating you, we may discover that you have a  condition that can be managed conservatively through physical therapy or interventional pain management. Or we may discover the condition is in possible need of surgical intervention. And if that’s the case, we can immediately confer with one of our experienced neurosurgeons. This is a really cutting-edge and collaborative approach that is among the first of its kind in this region.”

Longstreet Clinic’s Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center includes 24 providers, including 13 physicians and 11 advanced practice providers, each with onsite access to the latest imaging and therapeutic technology. Though its primary location is at 655 Jesse Jewell Parkway S.E., in Gainesville, Longstreet Clinic neurosurgery, orthopedic and sports medicine providers also see patients in Demorest and Braselton, offering convenient access points to the new program.

“We are well positioned to offer something different for health care in north Georgia – something different even than you would find in Atlanta. And we’re excited about what this advancement allows us to do for patients,” said Longstreet Clinic CEO Mimi Collins. “One of the reasons we undertook this is because we’re seeing an increase in demand for services that cross through many of these disciplines as well as an increase in what patients want out of the physician experience.”

The flexibility of care and combination of expertise available at the Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center offers patients a sort of “one-stop-shop” for a multitude of conditions and injuries.

“This new center offers a wonderful opportunity for quality treatment for anyone who is suffering from musculoskeletal, as well as many neurological disorders,” said Dr. Derek Moore, an orthopedic surgeon with Longstreet Clinic. “Whether you are experiencing unresolved pain or have suffered an acute injury, this center puts our experts together to help you feel better.”

Dr. Betsy Grunch, one of Longstreet Clinic’s board-certified neurosurgeons, said she and her partners are excited about moving from their former home inside the Guilford Clinics to the Center’s offices less than a mile away.

“Often our patients come to see us due to painful symptoms that also may be limiting their mobility,” Grunch said. “By practicing under the same roof as other complementary specialists, we not only can consult with them, but we can make seamless referrals which are easier on the patient. For example, we may see a patient who really would benefit more from seeing an orthopedist. Now, that patient doesn’t have to travel to yet another appointment or office just to get started on an appropriate treatment plan.”

Reasons to contact the Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center include sports injuries; issues with nerves; injuries to muscles and bones, including the spine; a variety of chronic pain concerns such as back, neck, and joint; workers’ compensation injuries; concussion management and much more.

Whether a patient’s problems stem from an accident/singular event (such as a sports injury, car accident or fall) or are a result of chronic pain, the Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center staff can help diagnose the source of the condition and then provide an appropriate course of treatment to aid recovery and improve the patient’s quality of life.

Longstreet Clinic will hold a ribbon cutting for the new Neuroscience & Orthopedic Center at 5 p.m. Oct. 19. For more information about the program, visit longstreetclinic.com/noc or call 678-207-4100 to schedule an appointment.
